Locality Kishorn is situated in South Wester Ross, unspoilt, romantically remote, breathtakingly beautiful - a unique part of Scotland. For wonderful photographs of the surrounding area visit Steve Carter at www.shieldag.org. From the oldest mountains on earth at Torridon to the early Christain settlement at Applecross with its wild sandy bays and the famous Bealach Na Ba you will find some of the most awe-inspiring and untouched scenery in Western Europe. Travelling North West on the A896 from Lochcarron, Kishorn shop is the last place to stop for provisions before crossing the famous Pass of The Cow - The Bealach Na Ba - to Applecross. Setting out to cross the pass is quite a challenge both physically and emotionally. The pass itself winds and twists for twelve miles peaking after only six miles at an altitude of 2053 feet - a dramatic breathtaking drive (or walk) of hairpin bends, gigantic cliffs, waterfalls, deer, and sheep. Although the peak is often clouded in mist a clear day gives spectacular views across to the Outer Hebrides. As one descends into Applecross the stretch of coastline and sky takes the breath away and one can easily imagine how in 672 ad Maelrubha the Celtic saint founded a monastery here and declared all land within 6 miles as holy, a haven for fugitives where they could be safe from capture. Even today an ancient atmosphere of sanctuary can still be felt. |
